Prerequisite: Head-Down Up/Down, Left/Right Turns, and Forward/Backward Movement.
Desired outcome: Shift sideways in both directions without changing heading or altitude.
Reference material: IBA Flight Tutorial #48.
Key points:
- Begin centered or to one side at a controlled height with a clear path.
- Rudder the lower portion of the leading leg into the airflow to create drive.
- Slightly bend and raise the leading arm while extending and relaxing the trailing arm.
- Keep the spine straight and maintain heading with a fixed reference.
- Oppose the inputs early enough to stop before the wall.
Coaching and safety: Inputs vary with the selected head-down position, so teach only the controls appropriate to that shape. Increase distance and speed gradually, preserve instructor access, and emphasize an early stop and bail.
