Head Down Forward & Backward

Move forward, stop, and move backward with coordinated upper- and lower-body inputs while maintaining heading, altitude, and control.

Prerequisite: Head-Down Neutral and Stable Body Position.

Desired outcome: Move forward, stop, and move backward with coordinated upper- and lower-body inputs while maintaining heading, altitude, and control.

Reference material: IBA Flight Tutorial #46.

Key points:

  • Start near the center with enough room to travel and recover without wall contact.
  • In a daffy position, extend the back leg and move the arms slightly back for forward drive.
  • Extend the front leg and move the arms slightly forward for backward drive.
  • Keep the spine straight, use small symmetrical inputs, and return the driving surfaces toward neutral to stop.

Coaching and safety: Define a short movement and early stop, leaving enough head clearance for the briefed bail. Require a stable stop before reversing direction and increase distance or speed only after consistent control.
