Back to Head Up Transition

Transition safely between a neutral back-flying position and a neutral head-up position on a defined level without uncontrolled drive or rotation.

Prerequisite: Head Up Side Slides.

Desired outcome: Transition safely between a neutral back-flying position and a neutral head-up position on a defined level without uncontrolled drive or rotation.

Reference material: IBA Flight Tutorial #34.

Key points:

  • Begin and finish near the center of the tunnel.
  • Coordinate the upper- and lower-body rotation instead of throwing one end of the body through the transition.
  • Arrive with the hips bent and stop in a clearly neutral head-up position.
  • Maintain a planned recovery to neutral back flying.

Coaching and safety: Begin low and at a controlled wind speed. Require a smooth, committed transition and a reliable stop before increasing speed or altitude, and keep the doorway outside the travel path.
