Over the Feet Transitions

Transition over the feet from a neutral belly or back position to the opposite neutral position without excessive wall drive, heading change, or altitude change.

Prerequisite: Completed all individual belly- and back-flying skills.

Desired outcome: Transition over the feet from a neutral belly or back position to the opposite neutral position without excessive wall drive, heading change, or altitude change.

Key points:

  • Begin around waist height above the net and increase upper-body surface area to create lift.
  • For belly-to-back, drive the knees toward the chest as rotation begins.
  • For back-to-belly, keep the knees bent and drive the feet under the body.
  • Prepare the stopping input before the target orientation and return to neutral only after rotation has stopped.

Coaching and safety: Early attempts require active instructor spotting. Watch for straight legs or a continuing torso arch that causes over-rotation, and avoid pausing vertically because that can produce a rapid descent.
